New years in Zbar

It's not a new years party unless someone gets tear gassed....

So we experienced Zanzibar for new years, the Kendwa rocks staff were busy all day prepping for the mother of all new years parties, it was a combination new years and full moon party aka the double whammy.
As we have come to expect in africa the preparations and service were underwhelming, they staffed 3 bartenders for 2500 people. Dinner was great, but was like a childhood haunted house. You couldn't see what was in the buffet or on your plate, no lights or candles, so you just had to go for it.
So things were pretty tame until after midnight when all the beach boys were let in - this is the common term for the young local guys who sideline as male prostitutes for older european women. Ask me about this when I get home. Soon after someone set off a teargas bomb and the beach descended into a slightly chaotic drunken melee. So it goes, the morning after troupe of people who passed by our bungalow on the walk of shame back from the beach was hilarious.

We are now in Stonetown waiting for a ferry to Dar, happy to get out of the black hole that is Zanzibar and on to the safari circuit. We met some great people and had a good time, but it was just too frigging hot to get anything done most days and the power outage combined with lack of ice and possibility for civil unrest made Zanzibar a good intro to Africa. At least costs are down, our bar tab for 7 days including booze and food was 360,000 TSH. about 250 dollars...so the daily average is descending.
